Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Grill pan or second skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 oz blue cheese, crumbled
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 4 large lettuce leaves (for wrapping the burgers)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce optional for added flavor

Instructions

  • Begin by heating 1 tablespoon of olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, occasionally stirring, until the onions are caramelized to a golden-brown color, which should take about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. If desired, incorporate the Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor. Divide the meat into four equal portions and shape them into patties.
  • Heat the remaining olive oil in a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the burger patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
  • In the last minute of cooking, top each burger with an equal amount of blue cheese, allowing it to slightly melt.
  • Remove the burgers from the heat and let them rest for a couple of minutes.
  • Assemble the burgers by placing each patty on a large lettuce leaf, topping with caramelized onions, and wrapping the lettuce around the burger. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a less intense blue cheese flavor, you can mix the blue cheese with cream cheese to create a milder topping.
Ensure the lettuce leaves are large and sturdy enough to hold the burger and toppings.
To keep the burgers juicy, avoid pressing down on them while they cook.
